Frogspawn coral, scientifically known as Euphyllia divisa, is a highly prized large polyp stony coral (LPS) among marine aquarium enthusiasts. It is celebrated for its striking and distinctive appearance, featuring branching tentacles with clusters of rounded tips that resemble a cluster of frog eggs, giving it its common name. These tentacles can come in a variety of colors, including green, pink, purple, and brown, often with contrasting tips in hues of white or yellow.
Frogspawn coral is native to the Indo-Pacific region, where it inhabits shallow reef environments. In an aquarium, it thrives under moderate lighting and water flow conditions, preferring stable water parameters with a temperature range of 72-78°F, a pH of 8.1-8.4, and a calcium level of 400-450 ppm. Its relatively hardy nature makes it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists.
The coral's tentacles can extend several inches from its base, creating a lush, flowing display that adds dynamic movement and vibrant color to the aquarium. However, these tentacles are equipped with stinging cells, known as nematocysts, which the coral uses for defense and capturing food. Due to its semi-aggressive nature, frogspawn coral should be placed at a distance from other corals to prevent stinging.
Feeding frogspawn coral is straightforward. It primarily relies on the symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within its tissues for nutrition through photosynthesis. Additionally, it can benefit from occasional feedings of small meaty foods such as brine shrimp or mysis shrimp, which can enhance its growth and overall health.
With proper care, frogspawn coral can become a stunning and resilient centerpiece in a reef aquarium. Its unique appearance and swaying tentacles provide a captivating and lively element, making it a favorite among coral enthusiasts.
